Navi Mumbai: The civic administration will now develop a centre for wrestling, on national champion Krushna Raskar’s demand. He made his request for a civic-owned centre for wrestling during the ‘Walk with the commissioner’ event held in Nerul last month.
“We are working towards building a civic-owned wrestling pit. We have identified a plot in sector 2, Sanpada, where this centre can be constructed,” said a civic official.
He added that a proposal will be made before the general body for its approval.

Currently, amateur wrestlers train at a makeshift arrangement, set up adjacent to a truck terminal in APMC. “I have been conducting training sessions from the makeshift premises for the past 10 years. We have 40 students being trained here,” said Raskar.
He added there was no facility for advanced training in the city. “Those who wish to train further have to travel to interior parts of Maharashtra like Satara. It is high time NMMC acknowledges the popularity of the sport,” he said.
